"Clearing the Plains" - Presentation by James Daschuk

Date:  Wednesday, Feb 21

Time:  7:00pm
Place:  Southminster United Church
            1011 - 4 Ave South

James Daschuk is the award-winning author of "Clearing the Plains: Disease, Politics of Starvation, and the Loss of Aboriginal Life".   He will be speaking about his research into how First Nations populations were driven from their traditional hunting grounds onto reserves in the mid 1800's and the tragedy that surrounds that.

Many churches were involved in running Residential Schools and the United Church was one of them.  Our church has been deeply involved in the Truth and Reconciliation process for many years and continues to work towards understanding truth and moving to reconciliation.

In 2018, McKillop United Church's Justice, Peace, and Social Action group is focusing on Truth and Reconciliation and we decided that we wanted to focus on the Truth piece this spring.  Jim Daschuk's book provides a key starting point to that understanding.  Published in 2014 by the University of Regina Press, the publisher states "In arresting, but harrowing, prose, James Daschuk examines the roles that old world diseases, climate, and, most disturbingly, Canadian politics - the politics of ethnocide - played in the deaths and subjugations of thousands of aboriginal people in the realization of Sir John A MacDonald's "National Dream".

Partnering with Southminster United Church, we have invited Dr. Daschuk to come and speak (for the second time) in Lethbridge.

Please join us in taking a step to understanding the truth of what happened in the 1800's, here in our own part of the world.

We exist to welcome, nurture, and equip people for spirit-filled, gospel living.
