The Justice, Peace and Social Action Committee

The Justice, Peace and Social Action (JP&SA) Committee supports the Pillars of McKillop United Church through activities designed to advocate for, welcome, affirm and nourish all persons within the church and the wider community regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability or other distinction. The Committee also promotes spirituality and the sacredness of our planet through activities relating to environmental issues.  Some of our projects have been lobbying the city for a ban on single use plastic shopping bags, holding a series of talks about environmental issues, holding "Social Justice Sunday" sessions with a number of topics including Gay Straight Alliances in schools.

We've also held an End of Life Choices seminar and held The Blanket Exercise to learn about our Native community and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Many of our events have been attended by the general public as well as members of McKillop.

McKillop is the only church who is a Community Partner and on the original Environment Lethbridge Council.

We have been involved from the beginning in "From Syria to Lethbridge" with Lethbridge Mennonite, Coaldale United and Southminster United churches, sponsoring a large Syrian refugee family. This project is ongoing with representatives from our committee working on bringing another part of this extended family to Lethbridge. We assisted with a Marhaba picnic welcoming many of the Syrian families that have resettled in Lethbridge.
